The Lookout Bar in Ottawa submitted Description
The Vibe
Located on the second floor of an old building in the heart of the Byward Market, the Lookout can be easily missed by its lack of obvious signs, but is one of the best-kept secrets in the city. The décor is slightly industrial in feel, with pipes and ducts visibly running along the ceiling. However, the walls are rich burgundy and copper accents along the bar and tabletops glow warmly in the soft illumination of track lighting.
Forget Sitting, Dance!
Seating can be scarce at peak times, but who cares? Get up, mix, mingle, and shake your groove thang! A big draw is the balcony that overlooks York Street. It's fun to sit out there on a hot night watching the people walk by. The walls are decorated by funky, moon-shaped hanging lamps and by the ever-changing art shows by local queer talent. The art is often erotic and is always interesting. (For inquiries to purchase or to showcase art, ask the owner) In the back, there are two pool tables, where girls and guys like to hang out. Tables are moved on nights with a guest DJ to create a small, intimate dance floor with an impressive light show.
The Mix
The bar is usually packed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and always has a safe and friendly atmosphere. The crowd is diverse most evenings; gays and straights all sit beside each other in a comfortable setting. Ages range widely from 19 to 50-plus. A DJ provides music Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Cocktail hours on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from about 4 to 8 p.m. are nice for a more relaxed and conversational feel. However, regardless of what time you go, you're likely to have a good time.
Hours: Daily 12:00pm-2:00am
